Country & community connections

Countries identify documented life or work connections. They do not necessarily identify citizenship. Community filters retain diasporic connections within and across national borders.

Many communities, connected histories

A developing, source-linked collection, beginning with Black people in Germany and expanding across Europe. Country connections describe documented life or work, not a citizenship test. Community labels follow public sources and are not inferred from appearance. Mixed-heritage, African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin, Black American, queer and other diasporic histories belong within this scope. Coverage is growing and is not a complete census of every country or community. People may appear in several creative fields but have one profile. Historical and contemporary work are both included. Existing BGHRA collaborators who are not documented as Black are not automatically assigned a Black identity.

Louis Brody

Louis Brody, born Ludwig M’Bebe M’Pessa Akwa in Douala, built a long performing career in Germany. His work also extended into Black collective organization: he helped establish the Afrikanischer Hilfsverein in 1918 and protested racist campaigning in 1921. His career connects performance and political action under the constraints imposed by racist casting and Nazi cinema.
